Ethiopia – A Cultural and Photo Tribal Immersion
This is an initial itinerary which we suggest for an extraordinary photo tour and can be customized for your dates and interests.
The south of Ethiopia and especially the Omo Valley is home to a fascinating range of distinct tribal groups until recently isolated from the rest of the world for centuries and who are still following their own cultures and customs. As roads have been put in to bring important medical care, education and trading, it has also started to bring in outside visitors. This is a unique opportunity to have incredible and even mind blowing intercultural encounters with one of the last vestiges of “Old Africa” before it too disappears. The quality and number of opportunities to capture images of the amazing people, wild game, primitive architecture and landscapes are almost too many to enumerate.
On this 16-day immersion we will be visiting between 8 and 10 different ethnic groups and will engage in cultural interaction with these proud and independent people. Lacking the traditional material culture we know, they express their artistic impulses through body painting, lip plates, hair decorations, scarification and other means./br>
A once-in-a-lifetime experience guided by an extraordinary local photographer and documentarian
After we meet and establish respectful relations with each of the tribes we will frequently be able to photograph them, their homes and their astounding way of life. We will also be able to spot and possibly photograph wild game in parks and reserves as well as panoramas and spectacular views that will provide some amazing nature photos.
Your leader on this once-in-a-lifetime experience is Aziz Ahmed Mohammed assisted by his well-experienced driver and navigator. Aziz’s background makes him perfectly suited for this assignment. He is a photographer and professional documentary moviemaker as well as an expert on indigenous birds and wildlife. He knows this area intimately, is fluent in both English and Amharic (the language spoken by the tribal people we will be visiting) and has an uncanny ability to engage people in an honest and open way.
NOTE: This is an incredible immersion into Tribal Ethiopia with extraordinary rewards. It is intended for experienced and flexible travelers. There will be long days and rural roads. We will be staying at the absolute best accommodations, lodges and guesthouses, available at each location. With only a few nights exception, you will find a private room, a shower and always well-prepared food at every stop.
